What's in a Houston business electricity bill

Your provider sells the electricity. CenterPoint delivers it, reads the meter and maintains the wires. CenterPoint's charges are set by tariff and are the same whichever provider you pick — they don't change when you switch.

For a business at or below 10 kVA, delivery is a monthly charge plus a per-kWh charge. Here is what's inside today's 4.2983¢ per kWh:

CenterPoint Tariff for Retail Delivery Service, secondary service at or below 10 kVA. Rates verified against the tariff on October 11, 2026; the distribution cost recovery component is effective September 30, 2026 (interim, subject to refund). Sum of per-kWh components: 4.2983¢.
CenterPoint chargeWhat it pays forCurrent rate
Base distributionLocal poles, wires and transformers1.7893¢ per kWh
Transmission cost recoveryThe high-voltage grid1.1506¢ per kWh
Distribution cost recoveryApproved distribution investment (interim, subject to refund)0.5490¢ per kWh
Energy efficiency programsState-approved efficiency programs0.4970¢ per kWh
Storm recovery and other ridersStorm restoration bonds, small riders and credits0.3124¢ per kWh
Customer and meter chargesThe account and the meter$4.96 per month

Above 10 kVA, most of delivery is billed on your peak demand instead: $13.41 a month, 0.0930¢ per kWh, $6.473180 per billing kVA for distribution and $4.342591 per kVA for transmission. The prices on this page at 10,000 and 20,000 kWh do not include those demand charges.

A fixed-rate plan fixes the energy price, not delivery. Delivery changes pass through during your term.

Are you over 10 kVA?

10 kVA is a peak-demand line, not a usage line. CenterPoint measures your highest 15-minute period each month. One month above 10 kVA moves you to the demand-charge schedule for at least twelve months, and you only come back once the current month and the previous eleven are all at or below 10 kVA.

Look for a line on your bill labeled demand, kW or kVA — and check the unit, because CenterPoint bills in kVA, which runs higher than kW. Our guide walks through where to find it: Are you over 10 kVA or 10 kW? Where to look on your bill.

What a Houston business might use

Start with your own bills. If you don't have them yet, these are national ranges from the EIA's commercial building survey — the middle half of buildings, converted to kWh per month for each 1,000 square feet. Multiply by your floor area divided by 1,000.

EIA CBECS 2018, Table C22, 25th–75th percentile, national. Not a Houston survey, and not a prediction of peak demand.
Business typeMonthly range per 1,000 sq ft
Office508–1,308 kWh
Retail store383–1,000 kWh
Restaurant1,725–4,383 kWh
Warehouse (not cold storage)133–658 kWh
Medical clinic775–1,775 kWh
Church208–625 kWh

A 2,500 sq ft office in the middle of its range uses about 2,100 kWh a month. A restaurant the same size can use three to four times that, and its peak demand is often what moves it over 10 kVA.

Houston vs Texas vs the U.S.

Today the lowest-priced business plan in Houston at 5,000 kWh is 10.04¢ per kWh all-in, checked October 15, 2026.

For context: Texas businesses paid an average of 8.47¢ per kWh in July 2026, and U.S. businesses 14.53¢ (EIA). Those are historical averages of what all commercial customers paid, including demand charges and areas without retail choice. They are not offers you can buy, so don't compare them with a plan price as if they describe the same bill. More on this: What do commercial electricity rates cost in Texas?

When should you sign?

There's no verified calendar rule that signing in a particular month gets a business a lower price. Wholesale and forward prices move, and a contract covers future months, not just the one you sign in.

What does cost money is waiting past your contract end. Compare before it expires, so you aren't pushed onto a month-to-month default rate or into a cancellation fee. Our guide: What happens when my business electricity contract ends?

Before you sign

  1. Check the dates. End date, renewal terms, notice deadline, and the price that applies if you do nothing.
  2. Check your usage and class. Use a year of kWh and demand figures. Ask how the offer handles delivery and demand.
  3. Compare complete costs. Monthly fees, pass-through charges and any bill credit (rebate). If a rebate needs a usage threshold, test it month by month.
  4. Check the term and exit cost. Match the contract to your lease. Read the early cancellation formula, not just the summary.

Frequently asked questions

What does a Houston business pay per kWh?
It depends on your usage and whether you're billed for demand. Enter your usage above to see current all-in prices at or below 10 kVA. Above 10 kVA, add CenterPoint's demand charges to the energy-plus-delivery price.
Is 10 kVA the same as 10,000 kWh?
No. kVA is peak power demand in a 15-minute period. kWh is energy used over the month. CenterPoint's line is about the peak, not the total.
Can I get back to the lower class after one quiet month?
No. The lower class requires the current month and the previous eleven all at or below 10 kVA, and at least twelve months on the higher schedule after crossing.
Why does my bill show kVA instead of kW?
CenterPoint's demand tariff bills in kVA, which includes reactive power. kVA is usually a little higher than kW for the same equipment.
Does a fixed-rate contract fix my whole bill?
No. It fixes the energy price. CenterPoint delivery changes pass through during the term.
What happens when my contract expires?
For small commercial customers (under 50 kW peak), the provider must send a final notice at least 14 days before the end, and the default is a month-to-month plan you can cancel without a fee. Larger accounts can have different terms.
